'A'ohe hana a Kauhikoa; ua kau ka wa'a i ke 'aki.    Kauhikoa has nothing more to do; his canoe is resting on the block. The work is done.    Without our ancestors we would not be here.

February 15, 2009

Present: Leihua Basso, president, Roxanne Martin, Greg Kurahashi, Terry & Joe Crnich, Rebecca Gaerlan, Malia Gomes, Dorothy & Wayne Bryant, Bob Miller, Kawika Caldwell, Martha, Rose & Manny Silva

Leihua welcomed everyone and opened the gathering with a pule. After dinner, she presided over an informal business meeting, beginning with a mahalo to Manny for a master 2009 calendar of events.

Chain of Command: Manny distributed copies of an organizational flow chart, which he devised to help us stay on track and thereby get more done. A copy of that document is attached to the original of these minutes.

Campout: Rose & Manny reported that a reservation has been confirmed for the weekend of Oct. 23-25 at Cape Lookout. Rose will check on availability of the clubhouse for our use that weekend. Information sheets were passed around and reservations requested. After discussion, it was agreed that we would ask for an August date for 2010.

Time out for Stimu-less prizes: $5 gift certificates to Fred Meyer won by Martha and Manny

Easter Egg Hunt: Rose passed around sign-up sheets for various ways to kokua. Terry urged the group to find out how many children will be expected that day (Apr. 19), so that we may have enough eggs and prizes. After a lengthy discussion re date, it was agreed that we would stay with the 19th and, thanks to a suggestion from Martha, we'll make it a Treasure Hunt (since it will be after Easter). It will be advertised as "South Pacific Ohana Treasure Hunt" and invitations will include an RSVP.

Door Prizes: Won by Joe, Roxanne and Wayne

South Pacific in Concert: Dorothy reported that auditions for the Wilsonville Theater Company production will be held Feb. 28th and March 1st. Audition flyers were passed around, and persons were urged to litter judiciously. All members were encouraged to be a part of the opening night festivities, when a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Nā Hawaiʻi. Dorothy was asked to get information and posters (when available) to Joe for inclusion in Haʻi Mai.

Olelo Lessons: Terry and Joe hosted the first lesson at their home, and said that she will set a date for lesson #2 very soon. She also noted that Francis Doo is teaching ukulele lessons at Bamboo Grill on Saturdays from 1-3 pm, beginning Feb. 21.

Leihua expressed her mahalos to all present. Joe was asked to come up with a Nā Hawaiʻi events calendar that can be sent along with the monthly newsletter to all members. Leihua also urged everyone to continue to support local Hawaiian events. Kokua is a two-way street!

The meeting was closed with the singing of "Hawaiʻi Aloha."

Respectfully submitted,

Dorothy Bryant
Secretary
