General Information
We are Nā Hawaiʻi -- Hawaiian Cultural Awareness Education, Inc.
(HCAE). We seek to bring together people of Hawaiian ancestry with
others who share a deep interest in Hawaiian history and culture. Our
purpose is to:
present cultural and educational opportunities for ourselves, our children and our communities
promote Hawaiian arts, language and history
sustain a network of mutual support
provide a model for our communities through our unique multi-ethnic heritage
We are located in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. If you
have an interest in the Hawaiian people or Hawaiian culture, we'd like
to meet you. If so, you might want to come to one of our meetings to
see what we're about. Check our Events
page for information on all upcoming Nā Hawaiʻi meetings and other
events. (Be patient, it takes a few seconds to load, because it has a
lot of information.)
Membership
If you're interested in membership, you can do either of the following:
Download Printed Form
Print it, and send it to us along with your dues. This is a fairly
large download. (This form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader, available
free from Adobe, in both Mac and Windows versions.)
Go to our Online Membership Form, fill it out, and click the Submit Application
button at the end of the form. After you get the confirmation notice
that your application was received, send in the dues amount for your
selected membership type to:

Your newsletter subscription will begin as soon as we receive your
membership dues. You can even pay your dues now online, with either a
credit card or debit card!
Changes
If you've been here before, you'll notice that we have a new look, with
many new capabilities. We've managed to transfer most of the
information/news from the other site, after a month of work on it.
During the course of the changeover, we realized that the old site
had several problems, most notably in its email/contact system (which
caused us to lose or have several emails from readers severely
delayed--we'll try to get to them as soon as possible) and the forum
system, which was hit hard by spammers. We hope the new site will help
deal with these former inadequacies. Our apologies to any who where
left in the lurch by these problems.
Registration Info
Be sure to register
using the panel to the left, and to sign in each time you come back, to
open up various site features, including being able to:
view all features of the message board (forum);
send other members personal messages and receive messages from them;
add and edit business entries;
add and see Hawaiian recipes; and
add and edit both news articles and event entries
Other parts of the website will also be available only to registered users.
You only have to do it once, and then click the 'Remember me' button,
and the site will remember your information from visit to visit.
You may find that your system doesn't allow cookies, and you'll get
a message about cookies when you try to sign in. If so, you'll need to
add 'crnich.dyndns.org' as a trusted site so your cookies will stick
(in other words, so your sign-in information will be saved on your
computer). You'll probably find these settings somewhere in Norton or
McAfee, if you use them.
When you register, you'll be sent an email that has a link in it to
complete the registration process. The information you send in your
registration process will not be made available to anyone else, and is
solely for the purpose of keeping track of registered users.
We're not selling anything here (okay, maybe a club t-shirt or two...), and registering puts you under no obligation whatsoever.
We decided to put this website redesign up, warts and all, and
finish off parts that aren't quite complete as we go--and we're pretty
much done! We're still adding features, though, as we discover them
(the software we're now using, and its many components and add-ons) has
been developed by people all over the world, and they're pretty
ingenious, so expect to see some more new sections added in the next
few weeks.
Conversion Details
As of 2007-02-03, we have essentially completed our update. Only the following sections (may) need additions/adjustment:
Membership Form (needs a bit of adjusting; it is usable as it is, though; and you can now pay your membership dues online with PayPal, even using a credit card or your bank card!)
Businesses (editing of submissions is not yet possible; you can make submissions, though, and view the businesses already submitted). Done! Entries still being added....
