Exciting Happenings Coming Your Way!
Written by Terry Crnich

We hope to see you all at the hui this Sunday--we hope to have a demonstration of lauhala weaving from Uncle Moki and we also hope to have some more great kanikapila time, too! Don't forget your ukulele, guitar, drum, spoons...you get the idea!?!

We are not going to have a formal hui the next month, though; for the month of May, we have been invited to Uncle Manny and Auntie Rose's hale for a DVD about Kalaupapa. We hope to have this potluck on Sunday, May 18th at 2pm. Please call and RSVP with Rose at 503-650-3321 and let them know if you will be able to join us!!

Please save the June hui date again for Riverwalk...this is a great way to have a good time with your fellow Nā Hawaiʻi ohana and make some money for the club at the same time. We plan to have a pot luck at the park after the walk, and what we encountered last year was that we were pau walking and it wasn't really lunch time, so you might want to think of foods that are more desserts, snacks or breakfast items that won't need much heating up when time to kaukau! We hope to get entry information soon; in the meantime, please think of who might be willing to sponser you and who you may want to ask to come walk with us! Everyone is invited--and every entry fee paid goes directly to Nā Hawaiʻi!

Would you like to have another Nā Hawaiʻi do-it-yourself yard sale again this year??? Last year's yard sale was a lot of fun and we have lots to look at! Everyone who would like to participate should bring your own tent, tables, change...it's designed to be like the swap meet...everyone at one place, but everyone brings their own sellers, goods and supplies...and you keep the money you make!

It's just an opportunity to get together and have some fun AND hopefully make a little money at the same time! If you feel so inclined, at the end of the day...you can donate a small portion of your profit to the club.. we wouldn't turn any kala away!

If you have goods you would like to donate to the club, but you don't want to participate as a seller, OR you would like to help sell and don't have things to donate...we might have a match !!! Please let me know if you would like to take part in the 2008 Nā Hawaiʻi Rockin' Rummage Sale...aaahhh...the crowd goes wild...

Hey! Anyone know where we can go camping this year?? Come on...somebody must know something! We want to camp, but we need an accessible area for all...and we'd like to have a common area where we can share meals and stories around the campfire, then retire to rooms (or yurts) with bathrooms and showers...humm...anyone know of something like that?

Calling all storytellers!!! Do you have a great story to share? Madam Pele ever sit in your back seat? Have a tale of the Night Marchers? We would like to bring these stories to our October hui - may they be spooky or sweet...please be thinking of something to share, and let us know!!!

See you all Sunday!

Those of you that were at our last Nā Hawaiʻi gathering will most likely remember that there will be no Nā Hawaiʻi meeting in March. Our next scheduled gathering will be April 20th, 2pm at the West Linn Fire Hall.

Having that said, Joe and I would like to open our house up for very informal movie night on Friday, March 14th at 7pm. We have a few new DVDs that we would like to share. One DVD is on Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and is called The Man Behind the Music. The second DVD we have is on Hawaiian Slack Key and is done by Keola Beamer. It's called Ki Hoʻalu. Both are really great films and we think you would enjoy them.

Since it's a Friday night and most of us work, we would like to make this a snack and dessert night; we will provide coffee and soda and some munchies and you can bring whatever you might want to snack on during the films. If coming straight from work, you may want to run through a fast-food place and bring your dinner with you.

We also have some fun YouTube segments saved, and if you want to bring your ukuleles or guitars, you are more than welcome to burn the midnight oil with us and we can play and sing until the cows come home!

We have a small house, but think we can accommodate about 20 to 25 people who like being in close proximity to each other! Please RSVP at our house number (mostly a message line) at 503-430-0065 if you will be able to come. Also, we live on a flag lot, (down a semi-long dirveway) and it would be a good idea to park on the street and walk down the driveway so that you don’t get blocked in when you are ready to leave. Our address is 18227 SW Monte Verdi Blvd, Aloha 97007 if you want to MapQuest it. We are very close to 185th and Farmington. You can call me (Terry) at my office #503-439-1500 for more directions.
Please come join us!

We're Back!

Hi all!

Hope everyone had great holiday season and are now settled back into enjoying your normal lives again! We miss seeing all of you and look forward to Sunday's hui at the Firehall! The hui Sunday will be from 1-4 pm instead of our previous 2-5 pm schedule!

There is another group that will be using the hall on the second Sunday at the time we used to have, so we may be changing the times or the weeks for upcoming meetings.

Don't forget your guitars or ukuleles or drums, spoons...just bring something to make some music!! We want to kanikapila and will have the songbooks for all who want to play and/or sing. Mike Martin has generously agreed to bring his guitar and we are looking forward to that!!

I have been trying to teach myself the ukulele, and I am finding some really easy songs that I will share with you all...I figure, if I can fumble along...you can too!

So, we hope to see you all at the Firehall on Sunday at 1 pm with smiles on your faces and music makers in your hands! Oh...and FOOD! Yeah...kaukau is always a welcome sight!

Remember that Nā Hawaiʻi will be having a Christmas Party this Sunday, December 9th at 2 pm at the Fire Hall. Please bring a pot-luck dish to share and come get a jump on some early celebration of the season together!

We want to have some Kalikimaka kanikapila, so remember to bring your ukuleles or guitars (spoons, keyboards--whatever), and let's get ready to rock! We will have the Nā Hawaiʻi songbooks available, but if anyone has any Christmas songs they think would be fun to try out, please feel free to bring along copies and we can try them out!

We also have a few other fun things on the agenda, and if anyone has a special Christmas Story (or joke - Malia) or some special joys or concerns to share for this holiday season, there will be time to share these things as well.

If you are bringing keiki, please leave us a message on the Nā Hawaiʻi line at 503-655-7243. At present, we are not sure if we will have any little ones visiting us that day and we have not planned any activities for the little ones yet. Please RSVP for keiki by 2 pm Saturday.

We hope to see all your sunny smiles at the FireHall on Sunday! May you have a wonderful Holiday Season.

Mele Kalikimaka!!

Sorry!

As you can tell, our website is finally back up and running. We lost the server 8 days ago, and because we are a non-profit, we had no backup. Luckily, all we needed was a new logic board, and we were up and running again; unfortunately, it took eight days for them to figure out why the logic board replacement didn't seem to work (and all that was wrong was a twisted cable).

My apologies to those of you who regularly use this site for your source of info about the Hawaiian community in Portland.
